Packing for a move and wondering where to start? Fret not, your packing can be a breeze with these useful tips.

1. Have a plan

As the saying goes “Failing to plan is planning to fail”. Planning can help ensure that timelines are met and nothing important is missed out during the packing process. Planning includes allocating sufficient time for packing before the date of the move.

How much time will it take to pack your items will depend on how big is your house and how many things need to be packed.

For smaller house estimated time for a packing one box a day should be about a month.

Starting early will provide some buffer time so that you are able to deal with any unforeseen circumstances.

2. Get ready packing materials

Packing materials you will need include:

  • Different sizes of cardboard boxes – these can be sourced from your local supermarket or grocery shops.
  • Packing tapes – get thick tapes to seal the boxes securely.
  • Stretch wrap – these can be used to protect furniture from scratches.
  • Marker & labels – Use markers and labels to organize the boxes in an orderly manner

Another option is to obtain packing materials and packing services from a moving company.

3. Pack room by room

The reason for this is so that you can stay organized during the move and don’t get mixed up with the boxes around. This will be easier for the house movers to load and unload the boxes during the move too as boxes from the same room are arranged together.

4. Start packing items you use least

It is logical to pack items that you don’t need to use frequently. For example decorative pieces or gardening equipment. By doing so you won’t need to open up boxes that have been sealed to search for items that you need.

5. Eliminate unwanted things

Unused or unwanted things can be eliminated by giving them away or selling them online at a second-hand website portal.

Reducing clutter by getting rid of unnecessary things can reduce the number of boxes during your move. This is an opportunity for you to do some spring cleaning too so that you only keep items that are useful.

6. Don’t over load heavy things into one box

It is best not to over load too many heavy things into one box. This is to prevent back injury and also to avoid boxes from tearing up during the move. Heavy things should be packed into separate small boxes while large boxes can be saved for lighter items.

7. Fill up the gaps in boxes

The last thing to do before sealing the box is to check if there are any empty gaps in the boxes. Fill these gaps with old newspapers or old cloths so that the items will not move about inside the box. Know this useful tip to prevent items from being damaged during transportation.

8. Use proper labelling

Having a systematic approach for labelling for your boxes can save you a lot of time when you are trying to find items from sealed boxes. Label every box with marker on the side instead of on the top, so that the boxes can be easily identifiable even if they are being stacked on each other.

9. Place heavier boxes at the bottom

While loading the boxes into lorry for transportation, make sure that heavier boxes are put below lighter boxes. This will prevent fragile breakable items from being damaged during the moving process.

You should get ready a box that contain essential items you may need during the move or right after the move.

This box should contain everything that you may need during and after the move, including toiletries, canned food, eating utensils, first aid kid, a set of clothes and so on. It is good to have this so that you do not have to search through many boxes to get these necessities.
