Movers and Packers vs. Lorry-Only Service: What's the Difference?

Planning a move might seem simple, but many people don’t realise that “movers and packers” and lorry-only services are two very different options. That confusion often leads to overpaying for help you didn’t need, or booking a lorry and discovering on moving day that nobody is there to carry your wardrobe down three flights of stairs.

What Does a Lorry Rental Service Actually Mean?

Vehicle and driver only

With a lorry rental service, you get a suitable lorry and a professional driver to transport your items safely. The driver’s responsibility is to operate the lorry and complete the delivery. In most cases, the driver does not assist with carrying, loading, or unloading your belongings.

You handle the packing, carrying, loading, and unloading

Since this is a transport-only service, you’ll need to prepare everything before the lorry arrives. That means packing, carrying items out of your home, loading them onto the lorry, and unloading at the other end. If you need extra hands, you arrange that yourself.

Our lorry rental service starts from RM150, with 1-tonne, 3-tonne, 5-tonne, and tailgate options depending on how much you’re moving.

What Does a Movers and Packers Service Actually Include?

Manpower for carrying, loading, and unloading

A movers and packers service includes a team of trained movers. They carry your belongings out of your home, load everything securely onto the lorry, and unload it at your new place. This is the core difference. You’re paying for people, not just a vehicle.

Moving boxes and protective wrapping

From the Premium package upward, we supply proper moving boxes rather than leaving you to source your own. The number included depends on which package and lorry size you choose, and extra boxes are available at RM12 each. Our team also wraps and protects your furniture, mattresses, and larger fragile pieces with bubble and shrink wrap on moving day, which is what stops your dining table getting scratched on the way down the corridor.

One thing worth knowing: with the Premium package we supply the boxes, but if you’re packing your own belongings you’ll need to buy your own bubble wrap, tape, and smaller packing materials. From the All-in-Service package upward, we supply everything.

Full packing and unpacking, if you want it

If you’d rather not pack at all, our All-in-Service package covers full packing of your belongings, and the Signature package adds unpacking at your new home plus goods-in-transit insurance. See the full movers and packers service for details.

Packing and moving happen on the same day

By default, our packing and moving is a single visit. The team arrives on moving day, packs, loads, and moves everything in one go. Packing in advance is possible at an additional cost, and you’ll find the details on our movers and packers page.

Furniture dismantling and reassembly

Large furniture often needs to be dismantled before it can be moved safely, including bed frames, wardrobes, and large shelving units. Our movers dismantle these and reassemble them at your new home, included from the Premium package upward.

When a Lorry Rental Service Makes Sense

You’re moving a small number of items

If you’re only moving a few pieces of furniture, several boxes, or a couple of household appliances, a full movers and packers service may be more than you need.

You already have manpower

If friends, family members, or housemates can help with carrying and loading, a lorry-only service lets you save on labour while still getting reliable transport.

You’re on a tight budget and willing to do the physical work

Lorry rental is the more affordable option, starting from RM150 against RM280 for a lorry with movers. As long as you’re prepared to handle the packing, lifting, and loading yourself, you can cut the cost of your move significantly.

Your items aren’t fragile or oversized

Lorry-only works best for belongings that are easy to carry and don’t need special handling. If everything is already boxed and nothing is particularly heavy, valuable, or awkward, moving it yourself is usually straightforward.

When Movers and Packers Makes Sense

You’re moving a full household

A three-bedroom house holds far more than most people estimate, including beds, wardrobes, sofas, washing machine, fridge, plus 30 or 40 boxes. Doing that with two friends on a Saturday usually takes longer than expected, and the lorry is charged by the trip either way.

You have bulky, heavy, or fragile items

Solid wood wardrobes, king-size mattresses, glass display cabinets, large TVs. These need proper handling, correct lifting technique, and protective wrapping. One damaged item often costs more to replace than the difference between the two services.

You’re moving to or from a condo or apartment

Condo moves come with rules such as service lift bookings, fixed time windows, loading bay access, and sometimes a deposit. A trained team works faster and is far more likely to finish inside your booked lift slot. If you run over, you may need to reschedule the whole move. Our condo moving guide covers the lift booking process in detail. Note that booking the lift and getting management approval is the resident’s responsibility.

You’re moving from a high floor or a walk-up

A landed house with a narrow staircase, or an apartment block with no lift access to your unit. This is exactly the situation where volunteer helpers drop out and injuries happen.

You don’t have the time or the people

If you’re working, handling handover with your landlord, or moving with young children, the hours you’d spend carrying boxes have a real cost too. This is where the All-in-Service and Signature packages earn their price.

The Hidden Costs of Booking Lorry-Only

Lorry rental looks cheaper on the quote, but there are costs that don’t appear until moving day:

  • Injury risk. Back strains and crushed fingers are common when untrained people lift heavy furniture down stairs.
  • Damage to your own items. Anything you pack, carry, and load yourself is your responsibility, so a scratched cabinet or cracked TV screen comes out of your pocket.
  • Extra trips. Underestimating your load means a second trip, and a second charge.
  • Missed lift slots. If your condo gives you a two-hour window and you’re not done, you may have to rebook and move on another day.
  • Time. Four untrained helpers is not the same as four trained movers. Moves that should take four hours can stretch into a full day.

None of this makes lorry-only a bad choice. It just means the real comparison isn’t purely about the quoted price.

Still Not Sure Which One You Need?

A rough rule of thumb: if you can comfortably carry every item in your home down to the lorry with the people you already have, book a lorry. If you can’t, book movers.

There’s also a third case. If you need people but not a lorry, such as shifting furniture within the same house or condo, or loading transport you’ve already arranged, our manpower moving service covers the carrying on its own.

You can see what’s included at each level on our house moving service page, and compare all five package tiers on our house movers price list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do movers and packers cost much more than lorry-only?

Yes. Lorry rental starts from RM150 and covers the vehicle and driver only. Our Budget moving package starts from RM280 and adds two to four trained movers for loading, transport, and unloading. Packages with packing, wrapping, and dismantling start from RM600. The gap widens with lorry size, floor access, and how much of the work you want handled for you.

Do I need to pack my own boxes if I hire movers and packers?

It depends on the package. With our Budget package, you pack your own belongings and our movers handle all the carrying, loading, transport, and unloading.

From the Premium package upward, we supply the moving boxes (the number of boxes depends on which moving package and size you choose), though for Premium you’ll still need to buy your own bubble wrap and tape for packing your smaller items.

Our All-in-Service package includes full packing with all materials supplied, and Signature adds unpacking at your new home. So you can hand over as much or as little of the packing as you want.

Can I pack myself but still hire movers for loading and unloading?

Yes, and this is exactly what our Budget package is designed for. It’s one of our most common bookings. You pack your boxes, and our team does all the heavy lifting: carrying everything out, loading, transporting, unloading, and placing items in the right rooms at your new home.

Will the lorry driver help me carry my things if I book a lorry rental?

No. With lorry rental, the driver’s job is to drive and to make sure the load is secured safely for transport. Carrying, loading, and unloading are yours to arrange. If you want a driver and movers, you need one of our moving packages instead.

Which option is better for a condo or apartment move?

Movers, in most cases. Condo moves usually come with a booked service lift slot and a limited time window, and a trained team is far more likely to finish within it. See our condo moving guide for the full process. Remember that booking the service lift and getting management approval is the resident’s responsibility.

Can I book a lorry first and add movers later if I change my mind?

It’s better to decide before booking, because the number of movers affects how long the job takes and how we schedule the day. If you’re unsure, send us your item list and we’ll advise which package fits. Changing on the day itself isn’t always possible, especially at month-end.

Choosing the right option saves you money, time, and a lot of unnecessary stress.
